The blog for CR Inside. Much talk about all things CR Inside...

Meet Darlene Monroe, Western Regional Editor

Darlene came to Celebrate Recovery through a friend, and non CR participant, in October 2009, at Capital Christian Center in Sacramento, CA. In 2010-11, she served apprentice Assimilation Coach at Capital. At Christmas 2010 she was welcomed to serve with a team of ladies to take a CR Christmas program and bibles to the inmates at the Sacramento County jail women’s facility at Rio Consumnes Correctional Center. At this visit she realized both an area of recovery that needed to be healed and her calling to prison and jail ministry. The visit was catalyst for a letting go of stuffed anger toward her mother for being incarcerated at this facility while Darlene battled cancer.

When asked for assistance in pulling together interest for a ministry team at RCCC, Capital’s CR TEAM was supportive and helped out by housing meetings and purchasing bibles. No matter how hard we tried we could not get in or even considered for clearance. The team of 5 faithful volunteers kept meeting and trying to get inside but constantly ran up against walls. In January 2011, during the One Day Summit held in Sacramento, CA, Darlene met Hector Lozano and asked for 2 minutes to pick his brain on the idea of CR at the county jails. She was privileged to get 45 minutes in a car Hector and Marnie (summit coordinator) to talk prison ministry. It was both a confirmation and the encouragement the team needed to continue moving forward.

In 2011, Darlene also attended her first CR Summit and all of the CR Inside groups. In January 2012, she moved to Christ Community CR to be near and work with a new sponsor and a new step study. A year later she was asked to join the CR leadership at Christ Community Church to serve under Marc and Becky Stormont. In August 2012 just days before she was headed to CR Summit at Saddleback, the little team received information that women were being moved to Folsom Prison, a fact that was confirmed at Summit. A few weeks later the small group of anxious volunteers received a call inviting them to come to Folsom to start Celebrate Recovery in a pilot program at the new Folsom Women’s Facility (FWF). FWF opened in January 2013. Celebrate Recovery began two weeks later on February 6th, 2013, as the first formal programming for the facility. On December 2nd, Celebrate Recovery at Folsom Women’s Facility will graduate their first five ladies to complete the step study curriculum. Sign-ups for the January 2014 step-study is beginning to fill quickly and this time to be facilitated by inmates.

Darlene continues to serve in multiple capacities through Celebrate Recovery including service at Capital Christian Center, Christ Community Church and as the Ministry leader for CR Inside at Folsom Women’s Facility.

Outside of Celebrate Recovery Darlene is also active in church and missions where she has the privilege to serve on Sunday morning services. She has also been blessed with two mission’s trips to Baja, Mexico where she hopes to plant a Celebremos La Recuperación (Celebrate Recovery) in the future.
